Many lifestyle choices affect our health, but few impact our overall wellbeing and longevity more than eating nutritious foods. In this article, we’ve assembled an easy guide to the best foods to have in your kitchen and pantry. With such a diverse list, you are sure to find many that you and your family love.

This is Part One, with more foods to come in the near future.

Fruits and berries are some of the most nutritious foods on the planet – and represent some of the healthiest items you should integrate into your daily routine. These are not only among the world’s most popular health foods, but they are easy to grab and go, with no preparation required.

1. Apples: The adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” holds quite a bit of truth. Apples offer lots of vitamin C, antioxidants and are dense with fiber. They are very filling and make an ideal snack between meals.

2. Avocados: Yes, avocados are a fruit! They are packed with healthy fats, fiber, potassium, and vitamin C.

3. Bananas: One of the world’s best sources of potassium, bananas are also a great source of vitamin B6 and fiber.

4. Blueberries: These tiny, delicious fruits are one of the most potent sources of antioxidants available.

5. Oranges: Vitamin C is this fruit’s main claim to fame, but it also delivers lots of fiber and antioxidants.

6. Strawberries: Low in carbs and calories, strawberries are exceptionally nutritious – high in vitamin C, fiber, and manganese.

Eggs and meat have endured some bad press in the past, but actually are quite nutritious and healthy. It would be best if you consume lean meats in moderation.

7. Eggs: Once demonized for causing high cholesterol, eggs are actually exceptionally nutritious and healthy.

8. Lean beef: One of the best protein sources is also loaded with bioavailable iron.

9. Chicken breasts: Chicken is low in fat and calories but rich in protein and other nutrients.

10. Lamb: Grass-fed lamb meat is high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Nuts and seeds are higher in fat and calories than the above foods but may actually aid in weight loss. They are a rich source of magnesium and Vitamin E, which are not easily attained elsewhere. Nuts and seeds also satiate the craving for crunchy foods and are easy to eat on the go.

11. Almonds: These popular nuts provide Vitamin E, antioxidants, magnesium, and fiber, contribute to weight loss and improve metabolic health.

12. Chia Seeds: If you are looking for a potent source of nutrition, chia seeds are among the best foods available. Small portion sizes deliver significant fiber, magnesium, manganese, and calcium.

13. Coconuts: This delicious option is packed with healthy fatty acids and fiber the body needs.

14: Macadamia Nuts: Although not as popular in the United States as other nuts, macadamias are very high in beneficial monounsaturated fats.

15: Walnuts: These versatile nuts are good for the brain, providing fiber and loaded with nutrients.

16: Brazil Nuts: These large, smooth nuts are beneficial for proper thyroid function and are packed with many nutrients. Not only that, they are one of the best-known sources of selenium.

Fish and seafood are healthy and nutritious, and provide a significant source of omega-3 fatty acids and iodine, two necessary nutrients lacking in most diets. Those who consume fish often have a lower risk of heart disease, dementia, and depression.

17. Trout and Salmon: These fish are not only delicious but are also a great source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and Vitamin D.

18. Sardines: Good things come in small packages? Sardines provide nearly all the nutrients your body needs in one place, including calcium and vitamin D.

19. Shellfish: Clams, mollusks, and oysters rank as high as organ meat regarding the amount of dense nutrition.

20. Shrimp: These crustaceans have lots of protein, very little fat, and are packed with selenium and B12.

21. Tuna: If you want lots of protein and low fat, tuna is a great and popular choice. Be sure to look for varieties that are low in mercury.

You may read this list and wonder where all the vegetables are, but not to worry. Vegetables are among the healthiest, most nutrient-rich foods in the world – and along with other great options, will be outlined in the second part of this series.
