One of my favorite hobbies is to check out pictures of before and after people got healthy. So seeing pictures of gentlemen that are in their, you know, in their 40s, and they weigh 200 pounds. And then seeing them down the road after they’ve done some triathlons or run some races, and now they’re down to they’re like lean 160s. I love those stories, because they’re so inspiring. And it’s such a great reminder of how much we can accomplish when we set our minds to it.
Gentlemen in your 50s, we are looking at a host of health problems that can start occurring at this age. These issues range across the board. At this point in life, you’ve had a setup for some problems, but they’re reversible. They’re reversible, they’re reversible, they’re reversible. And as a triathlete, I get to hang out with people every single day that have reversed health problems in their lives. But let’s talk about what the health problems are and why you might want to go to the trouble of exercising, and other things in order to fix them.
So, the first and most common issue that happens in our– for gentlemen and in your 50s is erectile dysfunction. I’ve treated this in clinic for years. And some of the things that cause erectile dysfunction are high blood pressure. So, like it’s really simple. The heart is a pump, your cardiovascular system is some tubes, and then you’ve got the penis, and you’ve got blood flow at the end of it, right?
So if the pump is messed up, then the flow isn’t going to flow properly. And the medications that are prescribed, pharmaceuticals that are prescribed for high blood pressure, they don’t work in your favor. They will cause erectile dysfunction over time. So will atherosclerosis, which is the clogged arteries. Heart and blood vessel disease, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease, all of these are going to work against you, and they are preventable. They are preventable. They are preventable.
So, health issues such as obesity, which are, they contribute to the increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, you can do something about that, and it really matters.
So, erectile dysfunction can also develop as a side effect of certain medications that in addition to the high blood pressure, it can also develop in side effects of antidepressants, sedatives, and ulcer medications. And some anti-androgen medications used to treat prostate cancer can also affect your sexual performance, and cause erectile dysfunction.
So the more you know, the more you know what decision you’re making. When your doctor says, “Oh, you’ve got high blood pressure. Here, take this pill,” you might want to say, “Hey, that looks like erectile dysfunction in three years. I’m going to try not having as much salt in my diet.”
Gentlemen in your 50s, you can do something about your health, and I’d be happy to help.
