The Bridge Between Give Me and Giving

As the holiday season begins, there is a beautiful emotional shift happening all around us. Halloween marks the start of a “me” season while New Year’s Day provides a sense of renewal. But the most powerful change happens in the space between these two moments.

Halloween is playful and expressive. Costumes let us show who we wish we could be. Children go door to door asking for treats with a spirit of bold joy. In many ways, Halloween reflects the feeling of “It’s my turn. I deserve something sweet after a long year.”

New Year’s Day, however, brings clarity. It’s a reset. We breathe deeply and say, “I am ready to grow. I am ready to give. I am ready to show up differently.”

So what carries us from the first mindset to the second?

Gratitude.

The Power of Gratitude During the Holiday Season

Between Halloween and Christmas sits Thanksgiving, the holiday that quietly transforms us. Gratitude shifts our energy from scarcity to abundance, from stress to ease, and from isolation to connection.

When we pause to notice the love around us, the support we receive, and the lessons we’ve learned, something opens within us. The softness of appreciation changes our hearts and steadies our minds. That change becomes the bridge from “give me” to “giving.”

Before the holiday rush sweeps in, I want to say thank you.

Celebrate the Care You’ve Given Yourself

Gratitude isn’t only about others. It also includes the care you’ve given yourself.

Take a moment to acknowledge your wins this year:

  • The nourishing meals you chose

  • The walks or workouts you completed

  • The boundaries you held for your wellbeing

  • The rest you allowed yourself

  • The practices that helped your energy stay steady

These are not small acts. They are the foundation of how you show up for your family, your work, and your purpose. When you honor this effort, you reinforce the part of you that is growing, healing, and strengthening.

Here are examples of simple, meaningful self-care choices I’ve seen in myself and others:

  1. Going to bed early on New Year’s Eve — even when at a party.

  2. Eating a healthy meal before attending a holiday gathering to stay nourished.

  3. Preparing home-cooked meals that are higher quality, cost less, and support wellness.

  4. Moms carrying healthy snacks so kids and adults stay grounded and energized.

These small actions help prevent burnout and preserve the generous spirit we want to carry into the season.
