Acupuncture for Headaches
Acupuncture is effective at treating and preventing headaches and migraines.
We describe pain very simply in acupuncture theory. Pain is the stagnation of qi and blood in the body. Qi is the invisible energy in the body which travels with the blood through the meridians to bring life force to the body. When the energy, Qi, and blood are blocked in some way, pain is the result. Our next objective is to determine which energy system, or meridian, is blocked so that we may make wise choices in treatment.
For headaches the location is a clue indicating which system, which we call a meridian, has a blockage. For instance a headache on the back of the head can be called a Taiyang headache. The primary acupuncture meridian that travels through the area of the back of the head is the “Bladder Channel of the Foot Taiyang”. We can choose points in the local area of the headache on the Bladder channel. Or, as is more common, we can choose points on the other end of the meridian to open the energy system and clear the blockage, therefore eliminating the pain. This is why you often see headache treatments which only use points on the feet and hands. The points on the ends of the channels are effective at opening the entire channel, and therefore relieving pain.
Another example would be a typical migraine headache which is located on the side of the head. The primary channel that travels through the side of the head is the “Gallbladder Channel of the Foot Shaoyang” and we refer to this type of headache simply as a Shaoyang Headache. We can use points along the Shaoyang channel of the hand or foot to treat the headache or, as is more common we can choose the channel that balances the Shaoyang, the Jueyin. When balancing, the excess energy that is blocked in the channel can be drawn away and the headache can be resolved. The channel we choose to balance is the Liver Channel of the Foot Jueyin. We can see here that in acupuncture theory the Liver and the Gallbladder work together, just as we know they do physically in the body. Which brings us to a very typical points to use for a migraine headache on the side of the head, Liver 2 and Liver 3, which are located on the top of the foot and are very effective as eliminating and preventing migraine headaches.
